Overall Experience: 8 / 10
Date Visited: Saturday, October 4, 2008

Open House NY is a weekend in which more than 350 buildings open their doors to the public for free. It is an opportunity to see inside and behind the scenes of place you normally can't visit.

There are many different types of places to visit. A lot of the locations have an architecture theme. Many of the openings are at architecture studios, or buildings with some interesting architecture. Many museums offer free entrance, and some add extra hours or special programs. There are several tours and talks with architects, artists, and designers. Some of the locations have things to do, others just have things to see.

With so much to see in just one weekend, it is impossible to get to everything. Many of the locations require advanced reservations and fill up quickly, so be sure to check the program early.

In 2008 we visited the following sites for Open House NY: Thirteen/WNET, Federal Hall National Memorial, The Prince George Ballroom, P.S. 260, General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen Library, Elevated Acre at 55 Water St., Chrysler Building, Grand Masonic Lodge of New York, and The New York City Marble Cemetery.
