Philadelphia
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States
We recently visited Philadelphia for a day trip. It was the first time most of our group had been there, so we weren't quite sure what to expect. The city was the first capital of the United States, and has many great historical sites (including Independence Hall and Congress Hall). There are also many parks and museums located not too far away.
The central part of the city was nice and clean, and felt very safe. The city had many nice parks, fountains, and was really a pleasure to walk through. Walking along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway (from the City Hall to the art museum) was an especially pretty walk. It was lined with flags from many countries, and had a large fountain at either end. Another nice area to walk around is the waterfront at Penn's Landing.
One of the other popular things to do in Philadelphia is enjoy a Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich. Two of the most popular choices are Pat's and Geno's. Unfortunately, I was quite disappointed in the quality of those sandwiches. They're very much a "cheap" type of sandwich. I would recommend looking around and trying to find a better restaurant serving cheesesteaks.
Getting Around
Philadelphia does have a subway system, but we didn't try taking it during our visit. Most of the city was very pedestrian friendly, with most of the attractions located in the central core of the city (which is only a couple kilometers across).
Visitors can also take a taxi. We took a taxi from one end of the main downtown area to the complete opposite end, and it only cost $13. There was no traffic at the time, so the trip only took around 10 minutes.
