Philadelphia is known all over the world for its cheesesteak sandwiches. Geno's is one of the two best known Philly Cheesesteak vendors in Philadelphia, and they're both conveniently located at the corner of south 9th street and E Passyunk Ave.

I was quite disappointed with the quality of the cheesesteak sandwich. The meat was chewy and fatty, the bread was a bit hard, the sandwich was overly greasy, and there really wasn't much meat on the sandwich. I have definitely had better Philly Cheesesteak sandwiches in other cities. If this was the first Philly cheesesteak sandwich I tried, I probably wouldn't bother trying other ones. Although this may be the "traditional" Philly cheesesteak, there have definitely been improvements in sandwich making since then.

The store was also covered with lots of "pro-America" and "pro-military" signage. I found much of this somewhat offensive. It's great to be patriotic, but plastering your store with one-sided, anti-immigrant slogans and "in your face" messages isn't the best way to show your opinion.

The restaurant received a 5/10 rating, but the quality of the food was only 4/10. The restaurant had a "novelty" feel to it, so it received an extra bonus point.

Dress

Very casual, just go up to the windows and place your order

Cost

Fairly cheap - a cheesesteak is $7.50 after tax

Service

There are two windows at Geno's. At the first window, you place your order by saying the type of cheese, and with or without onions. For example, to order a cheesesteak sandwich with cheese whiz and onions, you can just say "Whiz With". You pay at that window (cash only), and by the time you finish paying, your sandwich will be ready.

At the second window, you can order fries and pop. The second window is usually less busy than the first, so there is very rarely a line there.

The restaurant is usually quite busy, so there may be a bit of a wait before you are able to place your order at the first window. Just wait in line, and your turn will arrive. There is seating on both sides of the restaurant, but it was all taken when we visited. In the end, we ate our sandwiches leaning on a wall across the street.

Items Ordered

Provolone With

Cost:$7.50 (including tax)

The "Provolone With" is a Philly cheesesteak sandwich with provolone cheese and onions. The sandwich didn't have much meat, and what it did have was fatty and chewy. The sandwich was greasy, and overall just a very disappointing Philly cheesesteak sandwich.

Freedom Fries

Cost:$2.75 (including tax)

Keeping with its "go-America" theme, Geno's has decided to call its french fries "Freedom Fries". They were fairly typical fries. There was ketchup available on a stand beside the window.
