The End Of The Road is better known as the East Rift inside Hawaii's Volcano National Park. This is the location where lava flows went over the road in 2003. To get here, drive down the Chain of Craters Road, until you get to the parking area (near where the road ends). From there, it's approximately a 250m hike along the old road until you get to the real End Of The Road.

This is definitely a neat site! It shows the power that nature has - the lava that flowed here didn't care there was a road in the way - it kept right on flowing! From here, you can also see the site where lava flows into the ocean from a distance (usually just a smoke plume).

Estimated Visiting Time

This site is located near the ocean, approximately a 1-hour drive from Volcano National Park (each way). If you have the time, I would definitely recommend this visit. Visitors should bring water and have a car full of gas, since there is nowhere to purchase anything along the way. There are some small bathrooms at the bottom, near the End Of The Road, but that's it. Once you're there it is a short walk to the lava, but then you can continue walking on the lava for a bit further. Expect to spend about an hour once you get to the site.

Cost

This is a free attraction with your paid admission to Volcano National Park. Just get in your car and drive down.
