Thai sun is a thai restaurant located in uptown waterloo. I've been to Thai Sun before, and was pleased with their food. Unfortunately, this time I had a less pleasant experience. I was with a group of nine people, and they were unable to seat us altogether, so we split up into two groups and were seated at different ends of the restaurant. I was seated at a table that was facing an outdoor window. The sun was very bright, and was blinding the three members of our group that were facing the window. There was an awning outside, but the staff said they were unable to lower it.

We were also waiting for an hour before our food arrived. It was a long wait - we're just lucky nobody had any other commitments in the afternoon. Don't go to Thai Sun if you're in a hurry.

Cost

Thai Sun is a fairly cheap restaurant, but it's a "sit down restaurant", and not fast food style, meaning they charge a bit more. Lunch specials are $12.99 each, and entrees are between $13-$20.

Dress

Very casual

Reservations

Reservations are not accepted (for lunch on friday - they may be available during other times).

Service

I was disappointed the staff didn't do anything to block the sun - our table was not the only table to complain. If the awning was unusable, they should at least invest in blinds for the upper windows. After being seated, we waited for approximately 55 minutes before our food arrived.

Items Ordered

Thai Pasta Lunch Special

Thai Pasta with shrimp, sauteed chicken, and a side of fresh mango salad
Cost:$12.99

The Thai Pasta was an alright lunch special, but I felt it was overpriced. I asked for it to be extra spicy, and was disappointed with the amount of spice. The mango salad was small, although tasty. The chicken satay was dry and overcooked, but the peanut sauce it was served with was quite tasty, and served to moisten up the chicken.

The "thai pasta" looked and tasted like cheap packaged noodles that had been flavored, and served with a couple veggies added to them. The flavoring was quite good, and they were somewhat spicy. There really weren't that many veggies or shrimp - there were exactly two shrimp, and not many more veggies.

I definitely felt that this lunch special was overpriced for what it offered.

Red Curry Lunch Special

Red Curry with chicken, spring roll, and a side of fresh mango salad.
Cost:$12.99

The red curry was served with the same mango salad as the thai pasta - it was quite good. The spring roll was fried, and was very good. The curry was served in a bowl with a side "pyramid" of rice, and was very soupy. There weren't very many chunks of vegetables or chicken inside. It was not very spicy - just a bit, which is what I was hoping for. Overall, it was very tasty, but overpriced for what it offered.
