Shops and Restaurants

St. Augustine is the oldest area in America continuously occupied by Europeans. The St. Augustine Historic District runs from about Orange St in the North to King St. in the south and about Cordova St in the West to Castillo Dr in the East.

The St. Augustine Historic District is full of historic buildings turned into shops and restaurants. It is a neat place to walk around, look in the different stores, and grab something to eat in a unique atmosphere. Hypolita St. seems to be the main street running east-west - there are lots of small shops and boutiques there.

Castillo De San Marcos

The Castillo De San Marcos is one of many historic attractions to see in this area. You could pay a small fee (about $6) to enter the fort, but we were short on time so we just walked around the outside (which was free). There is a nice view here looking out on the ocean.

Parking

If you're not staying at a hotel in the area (of which there are many), there are many parking garages nearby - expect to pay a minimum of $5 for parking. If you're only going to stay and look around for a few hours, there is also 3-hour free street parking available on Menendez Ave. (Highway A1A)

Estimated Visiting Time

You can really spend as much or as little time as you'd like here. There are many stores to look in, and if you're the kind of person that needs to see everything and eat at all the local restaurants, you could probably spend a couple days here before running out of things to do. If you just want to do a bit of exploring and perhaps enjoy a meal or two, three or four hours in the St. Augustine Historic District is probably sufficient.

Nearby Hotels

There are a number of hotels in the St. Augustine Historic District - many of them look quite nice. Because of their location, they're probably fairly expensive (be sure to check the hotel you're interested in for exact pricing). For a slightly cheaper alternative, we stayed at the Holiday Inn - St. Augustine Historic District, which was approximately 2km away from the historic district.
