Sole is located near the Perimeter Institute and the rest of Uptown Waterloo. It’s a fancier restaurant with higher quality food than the typical restaurant in the area. They frequently change menus, and always have interesting daily specials.

Cost

Appetizers are around $10-15
Soup: $6, Salad: $8
Entrees from $16-$40

Dress

Shorts are acceptable on a hot day outside, but a nice shirt is appropriate. Nice jeans or dress pants are suitable for inside.

Items Ordered

Bread

Cost:Free

Every table is served with bread and dipping oil to start. The dipping oil with herbs is quite delicious and a nice alternative to butter.

Strawberry Daiquiri

Cost:$6

The Strawberry Daiquiri was sweet, and did not have any large ice chunks or ice pieces to detract from the smooth strawberry flavor.

Mixed Baby Greens Salad

In a raspberry vinaigrette with blueberries, strawberries, spicy pecans, and Quebec blue cheese
Cost:$6.95

C: The salad was a nice combination of sweet berries with sharp blue cheese. The flavours worked well together.

A: The salad tasted really good, but it was difficult to eat. There were too many large difficult to eat pieces, and also I couldn’t get over how gross blue cheese looks. I thought the pecans were very sweet, not spicy.

Medallions of Pork Tenderloin

Wrapped with bacon, pan seared and served on truffle and chive mash with grilled onions and a porcini cream sauce
Cost:$19.95

C: The only was to make pork better is to wrap it in bacon. There wrapped medallions were covered in what tasted like a wine gravy, and placed on top of mashed potatoes. There were a couple of pieces of broccoli thrown in for color. The pork, gravy and potatoes worked magnificently together. I was very pleased with this dish.

Rating:9/10

A: Overall I liked this dish. I thought it was a bit salty, but that may have been because of the bacon. I also thought the broccoli was too oily. The mashed potatoes were delicious – great flavor and just the right texture.

Rating:7/10

Sweet Potato Lasagna

Layered with leeks, shiitake and portobello mushrooms, feta and mozzarella cheese served on tomato reduction with endive
Cost:$16.95

C: Sweet potato lasagna is well appreciated by the potato lover in all of us. My only complaint is that the sauce is too sweet. The sweet potato lasagna itself is fabulous. The texture of the mushrooms is not noticeable although they do contribute a slight bitter flavour that complements the sweetness of the potato.

A: I had been craving this dish for two years since we last had it, and I was disappointed that it didn’t taste the way I remembered. I probably built it up in my mind. It was still very good, but much cheesier than I remembered and also I thought the sweet potatoes should have been a little softer since it was difficult to cut.
