The Museum of London Docklands explores the history of the London Docklands, and the impact they had on the city and the world. London was a major port city, so the involvement of the ports was significant. The museum is a high-budget facility with modern displays and interactive exhibits. The quality of the displays is on par with Museum of London (as the museums are related), although I found the contents of the Docklands museum even more interesting.

The museum probably isn't quite as entertaining for kids, but there's enough to see that they shouldn't be bored.

The museum starts off talking about how the Thames was used by Roman ships, and how the city was originally founded as a Roman port. It then follows the ports of London through to the present day. There is a large room discussing the ports role during World War II, and more recently, after the ports were no longer active, how the area was transformed into the modern finance district of Canary Wharf.

Estimated Visiting Time

Allow 45 minutes if you just want to walk through everything quickly. If you're interested in the history of the docks, allow up to 2 hours to read all the displays.

Cost

The Museum of London Docklands is free.

Getting There

The Museum is easily accessible by public transit. If you're on the DLR line, exit at 'West India Quay'. If you're taking the Jubilee line, exit at Canary Wharf. There are a number of signs from either exit to lead you to the museum. It is about a 2-minute walk from the DLR and a 6-minute walk from the Jubilee line.
