What a ridiculous tourist restaurant! Most restaurants in Victoria Falls are for tourists, but this one takes it up a notch. Prices are slightly above what you would expect to pay in Cape Town. The service was good though, and it felt like an American restaurant. We were even provided small dishes of popcorn and peanuts to snack on, and rolls before our appetizers arrived. There was outdoor seating in the garden, and "indoor" seating in the covered porch of the restaurant. The decor was quite nice, and the restaurant was clean and felt safe. Musicians will occasionally perform live music in the evenings and get the tourists to dance with them.

Cost

Mama Africa was quite affordable compared to the hotels in Victoria Falls. Slightly cheaper food was available at some of the smaller restaurants, like the African Hide Cafe.

Service

The service was good - like a typical American-style restaurant.

Reservations

Reservations may be beneficial on a busier night, but we visited Victoria Falls during a quiet period.

Items Ordered

Cream of Cauliflower Soup

Hot and cold as chef's creation
Cost:$6

The soup was very creamy, and only had a mild cauliflower taste. It had a bit of a mild spice to it. It was a small bowl of soup, but quite heavy with cream.

Vegetable Curry

Served with either sadza/rice or peanut butter rice
Cost:$10

We ordered the curry with peanut butter rice. This was a good option for the curry. In general, the peanut butter rice was delicious. The curry was only mildly spicy but still very good. The sauce had a very enjoyable taste. The vegetables consisted of mainly carrot with a little bit of onion, potato, and green pepper.

Hunters Pot

Game of the day cooked stew, slowly in a portjie pot. Served with either sadza/rice or peanut butter rice
Cost:$18

This evening, the hunters pot consisted of Ostrich meat. The meat was very tender and otherwise tasted a bit like beef. The stew also had carrot, onion and potato. The liquid part of the stew wasn't as tasty as the curry. We ordered the stew with sadza, which is a corn meal of sorts. It is pretty plain tasting, but soaks up the stew juice nicely. The dish also came with sweet baked squash and fried spinach with onion.
