The African Hide is a restaurant in the town of Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. It was one of the few restaurants in the area not affiliated with a lodge. It looked fairly casual, and was fairly casually operated, but still offered decent food. Although it was only tourists who ate here, it had a bit more authentic feel than other restaurants since it didn't seem to be operated by a large company.

Dress

Very casual

Cost

Most entrees were around $10. Beers were $2, wine was $3.

Service

At one point one of the street hagglers we had been negotiating with earlier asked the manager if he could talk to us. I guess the manager said yes, because he came over to our table to continue the negotiation. I thought that was a bit weird.

Items Ordered

Crocodile Love Bite

Never been bitten? Crocodile meat coated in a spicy sauce and lightly fried. Set on a bed of lettuce and herbs and accompanied by our zesty dipping sauce.
Cost:$5

This appetizer consisted of many small pieces of crocodile meat that were breaded and fried. It had a sweet and sour, spicy kind of sauce, that tasted like spring roll sauce. The crocodile meat itself tasted like chicken, although it was slightly more rubbery.

Traditional Huku Idoli

Chicken stewed in peanut sauce and served with a side of wild spinach in a tomato and onion relish accompanied by samp (crushed corn).
Cost:$11

The chicken was two drumsticks and one thigh with the bone in. They were covered in a tasty thai style peanut sauce. It also came with a corn dish that tasted kind of like a puffed corn. It was mostly tasteless, kind of like rice, and served the same purpose. There was also a creamed spinach like vegetable with tomatoes.

Butternut Bake

Half a butternut pumpkin baked and then stuffed with a mix of creamed seasonal vegetables. Accompanied by rice.
Cost:$10

Half a butternut squash was baked with a mixture of creamy vegetables inside. The vegetables were very creamy and quite tasty, especially when adding the sweet squash. It was served with a portion of rice. This was probably the best item we had here.

Marble Cake

Cost:$2

The cake was a fairly large piece of cake, especially considering the price. It was excellent value - probably the best cake per dollar I have ever purchased. It was also delicious. It was a soft moist cake with a thin layer of very rich icing.
