Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point
Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa
Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa
The Gape of Good Hope and Cape Point are two scenic areas located at the southern tip of the Cape Peninsula, just south of Cape Town. We visited them on a private tour of the cape peninsula. The landscape is fairly rocky - the rocks here are part of the same rock formation that make up Table Mountain closer to Cape Town. The areas also offer beautiful views of the ocean and some nice walking paths.
The Cape of Good Hope
The Gape of Good Hope bills itself as the most south-western point of the African continent (but does not define how they determine that - there are points more west in africa, and more south). There isn't much to see here, other than a few sign markers on the ground that mark this area as the most south-western point of africa.
Cape Point
Cape Point is the site of two lighthouses, the Two Oceans Restaurant, and a small tourist shop. Both areas are incredibly scenic and offer beautiful views of rock cliffs and water. The altitude is higher than the Cape of Good Hope, so the views are better.
Cape Point has a 'funicular' (a cable railway) that, for a small fee, takes visitors up to the top where they can see the old lighthouse. Visitors are also free to walk up to the old lighthouse at no charge. It's a good, steep walk, but the beautiful views all the way up make it very rewarding.
If you're feeling brave, you can also walk through a gate that says 'No Entry' along a very narrow path that leads to the point furthest out on cape point. From this point, you can see the new lighthouse which was built closer to the water.
