Barolo Restaurant is an Italian restaurant in New York City, on West Broadway, just south of Spring Street. They offer slightly more upscale Italian food and dining than you will find in Little Italy, with slightly higher prices. Overall, dining here is probably better value than in Little Italy. The restaurant is also decorated with sligtly upscale decor.

The restaurant is quite large with a nice open garden. We came here hoping to sit in the garden, but there were too many people smoking in the garden.

Dress

The dress varied here. Some people were just wearing jeans, while other people were wearing suits. Jeans and a nice shirt would probably be a safe choice.

Cost

Salads were around $10, appetizers/pastas were around $20, and meat dishes ranged from $25-$40.

Service

There was nothing noteworthy about the service at Barolo Restaurant. It was pretty typical for a restaurant.

Reservations

We arrived around 5pm on a Sunday, and the restaurant was mostly empty.

Items Ordered

Bread

Cost:Free

This bread was probably the best reason to visit Barolo Restaurant. It was fantastic! We even had them bring us another basket, it was so tasty. The bread was a slightly seasoned focaccia bread with large pieces of salt on top. I found the salt pieces made the bread too salty, but they were easily removed. The bread was light and airy, but was also quite oily.

Arugola E Parmigiano

Arugola salad with parmesan cheese
Cost:$9

This arugola salad was disappointingly bland. The parmesan cheese probably wasn't real parmesan, although it had more flavor than typical North American parmesan cheeses. The salad itself definitely could have used a different dressing. The dressing was very plain, and didn't give much flavor to the salad.

Trenette Avvantaggiate Al Pesto

In the traditional Genovese style - Handmade whole wheat and chestnut flour linguini with pesto, string beans and potatoes
Cost:$18

This pasta was quite good. The linguini had a very faint hint of chestnut, although it was definitely overpowered by the pesto. Fortunately, the pesto was very good, but perhaps slightly too oily. This was the best dish that we ordered at the restaurant.

Gnocchi al taleggio e pepe verde

Potato gnocchi with taleggio cheese and green peppercorn sauce
Cost:$22

The potato gnocchi was quite interesting. The gnocchi were quite squishy, but didn't have much flavor by themselves. They were definitely just a vehicle for the cream sauce that went with them. The cream sauce was pretty good, but didn't have much flavor other than the cream and a hint of cheese. The green peppercorns did add flavor, but it came in bursts (when you crunched a peppercorn) rather than being disbursed throughout the dish.
