Ancaster Mill is a beautiful restaurant situated on a waterfall near an old mill. It is similar to the Cambridge Mill. The venue is simply extraordinary, especially when we visited in the winter. The restaurant is beautifully finished with wood, stone, fireplaces, and very large windows that overlook the waterfalls. It felt like a warm cozy farmhouse. Most of the tables are either right next to the windows or close to the windows. There was also a private dining room for groups. The food we had was all good, although it didn't quite live up to the grandeur of the venue.

Items Ordered

A Selection of Breads from Bread Bar

Tapenade, Hummus, Apple Butter
Cost:5

There were four different types of breads in this dish that was great for sharing with the table. There was only a small amount of hummus and tapenade though, so we ran out before we finished the bread.

Lentil and Beet Root Salad

Goat Cheese, Fennel, Toasted Hemp Seed
Cost:11

This salad was made with small dark lentils that added a nice flavor to the beets. There was a mild sauce and mostly you could taste the flavor from the large pieces of beets. It was also served with a large cracker that was lightly seasoned. It was like a big flat crouton.

Tenderloin 7 oz

Lean and Tender
Cost:37

The steak came with a carrot, a broccolini and some potatoes. The steak was quite tender, although not as tender as a filet mignon. The steak had a nice charred taste, but no sauce. I was a bit disappointed in the steak - I felt it needed a bit more flavor, either through a seasoning rub or sauce.

Lamb “Two Ways”

Almond Crusted Loin and Braised Shoulder “Cigar” Soft Polenta, Pecorino, Cipollini, Sicilian Olive Gremolata
Cost:42

The lamb was a bit disappointing - the dish was a bit bland. Even with the crusting, the lamb was a bit plain and the polenta was also very bland. The cigars had a nice Moroccan spices taste, although they were also quite mild.

Parmesan Truffle Fries and Roasted Squash

Thyme, Chives, Aioli and Brown Butter, Sage
Cost:8 each

These fries were amazing. You could really taste the truffle in them. It was quite a large dish for a side dish, but was good for sharing. They were covered in cheese which also helped give them some added flavor.

The roasted squash was a small side dish by comparison with the fries. It was a pretty good squash with just a bit of butter and sage on top.

Pumpkin CheeseCake

Caramel, Toasted marshmallow, Candied Pumpkin seed
Cost:10

The pumpkin cheesecake was a nice velvety cheesecake with a hint of pumpkin. It was nice and light tasting, so it wasn't overly heavy as some cheesecakes are.

Dark Chocolate Tart

Pistachio Crunch, Raspberry, Vanilla Chantilly
Cost:10

The dark chocolate tart was a very chocolately dessert. It came with a bit of whipped cream and raspberry jam on the side.
