Island Lava Java is a casual dining restaurant/cafe located in Kona. Visitors are expected to seat themselves. During the morning rush, orders are placed at the counter at the front. During lunch/dinner, a waiter will come to your table to take your order.
I was quite impressed with the quality of food served by Island Lava Java. Although I was at first disappointed that they were out of the item I wanted (lasagna), my opinion of the restaurant soon changed, as everything we ordered was simply excellent.
The restaurant's outdoor seating area does offer an ocean view (since it's fairly close to the water), but the sunset is not quite visible from the restaurant.
Cost
Most items are reasonably priced for Hawaii. Salads are around $10, and pizzas range from $13 to $20. Entrees also range in price from $11 to $22.
Dress
The restaurant is very casual.
Parking
There is a large free parking lot available behind the restaurant. It's easiest if you enter it from Kuakini Hwy.
Items Ordered
Big Island Greek Salad
Organic greens, couscous, avocado, tomato, cucumber, mild feta, kalamata olives, pepperoncini, roasted red peppers, croutons & balsamic splash. Served w/ our house-made balsamic vinaigrette
This was quite a good salad, but isn't really a "greek" salad. I'd prefer to call it a "Greek-Inspired" salad. The salad had lots of ingredients with a lettuce base. The salad even had raisins and couscous! The vinaigrette dressing was also very good.
Roasted Veggie Wrap
Oven-roasted eggplant, butternut & summer squash, carrot, onion, zucchini, red & green bell peppers, all wrapped in a spinach tortilla with house-made hummus & macadamia nut pesto
This veggie wrap was great! It had lots of high-quality vegetables put together with a great pesto sauce. The fries were also really good - they were thin and crispy.
Pasta Special
Fettuccine with Ono fish, mushrooms, garlic, tomatoes, alfredo sauce
The pasta special today was excellent. The fish didn't taste like fish, but was seasoned deliciously. The dish had a very nice garlic and cream flavor. It was a bit salty, but otherwise very good and flavorful.
Lava Java Shake
Locally-made Big Island Kona coffee ice cream, espresso authentico & milk
This shake was amazing! I still dream about it. It was everything that a coffee milkshake should be. It was creamy and smooth, with a delicious coffee flavor. It could not have been better.
