The Unfinished Obelisk
Aswan, Aswan, Egypt
The Unfinished Obelisk is an ancient quarry where the ancient Egyptians started to carve out an obelisk from the granite bedrock in Aswan, but abandoned it when cracks started to appear.
Through the entrance, there's a short video presentation that wasn't running when we arrived. Instead, we were able to walk up the rocks around the unfinished obelisk so we could see it from the sides and the top (looking down). The view from the top of the obelisk was also quite nice.
While walking around the obelisk, we saw that there were some other places where obelisks were obviously taken out at one point. We asked a tour guide about them, and he said that yes, the whole area was an obelisk quarry. There were many obelisks taken out from this area.
Cost
The cost for foreign tourists to visit the unfinished obelisk is 25 LE per person. Cameras and video cameras are permitted for free.
Estimated Visiting Time
It's quite neat to see the Unfinished Obelisk - it provides some interesting insight into how ancient Egyptians carved other obelisks. Half an hour is probably sufficient to visit the obelisk, but there's also a short video presentation at the start that may be running during your visit. If you're interested, allow extra time for that.
