The North Square is a nice restaurant located on the northwest corner of Washington Square Park in NYC. It looked like the restaurant was affiliated with the Washington Square Hotel. The restaurant was located just below street level and had a cozy feel. The food was all pretty good and nicely presented.

Cost

We visited during restaurant week and we all took advantage of the $35 fixed price menu.

Reservations

Recommended - the restaurant was busy when we visited and it is a fairly small restaurant with not very many tables.

Items Ordered

Artichoke Soup

lemon cumin croutons, chives
Cost:Part of the $35 3-course fixed-price menu (appetizer)

The artichoke soup was quite creamy and had a really mild flavor. It didn't taste very strongly like artichoke - or strongly like anything, for that matter. It tasted like a very generic cream soup.

Tuna tartare

avocado, ginger cured vegetables, lemon-lime vinaigrette
Cost:Part of the $35 3-course fixed-price menu (appetizer)

The tuna tartare seemed like a better choice than the artichoke soup. It went quite well with the avocado and tasted fresh and zesty with the lemon lime vinaigrette. It was also presented quite nicely. There were two crackers on top that were quite good - they were crunchy and oily.

Wild north atlantic arctic char

oven dried tomatoes, basil risotto, black truffle sauce
Cost:Part of the $35 3-course fixed-price menu (main)

The salmon was a pretty typical fish. It was fairly plain tasting by itself, but the basil risotto had a good strong basil flavor. The oven dried tomatoes were also quite flavorful (and a bit acidic) and gave the fish some flavor.

Roasted pork loin

butternut squash, celery root, fig relish, pomegranate sauce
Cost:Part of the $35 3-course fixed-price menu (main)

The roasted pork loin was a bit unusual for pork loins - I think it was an unusual cut of meat. The outer layer sort of fell off, almost as if it had been wrapped in a thick cut of bacon. The pomegranate added a very nice sweet sauce that went well with the pork. The squash was mild tasting but also provided a nice accompaniment for a winter dish.

Chocolate mousse cake

Cost:Part of the $35 3-course fixed-price menu (dessert)

The chocolate mousse cake was rich and chocolatey. It was just mousse - there was no cake to it. The darker chocolate ball on top was a dark chocolate ice cream.

French apple tart

spiced pear sauce, caramel ice cream
Cost:Part of the $35 3-course fixed-price menu (dessert)

The apple tart was OK. There was a thick crust to it and a few slices of apples inside. It went reasonably well with the caramel ice cream.
