Overall Experience: 8 / 10
Date Visited: Friday, March 7, 2008

"The grottos" at Rosh Hanikra is a cave approximately 200m long on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, near the border between Israel and Lebanon. To get to the cave, after paying admission, visitors must take a cable car down a cliff. The site advertises this as the steepest cable car in the world.

At the bottom, there is a short video presentation that you can optionally watch before entering the cave, or after (or not at all). The video presentation is approximately 10 minutes in length, and is offered in both English and Hebrew, at different times. The video presentation is a little bit corny, talking about "A love story between the sea and the mountain". Although parts are a bit cheesy, the video does provide some interesting information, and it's not that long, so it's not hard to sit through.

The cave itself is quite nice. The sunlight comes through the rock at different places, and makes the water look nice and blue. The rocks are quite white in places, and look very pretty. The pathway through the cave is clearly marked, and there are barriers preventing visitors from falling in the water. Nevertheless, the rocks can be slippery, so be careful!

From the exit of the cave, it's a short walk back to the cable car. On a good day, the scenery here is quite nice. There is a beautiful view of the Mediterranean Sea, so be sure to enjoy it!

Estimated Visiting Time

Visiting the site can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on how leisurely you want your visit to be. The cave is only about 200m long, so it doesn't take long to walk through, but you might want to spend some time in the caves to enjoy the views. The cable car ride is quite short, and doesn't take more than a couple minutes. They run fairly regularly, so you don't need to wait very long for a ride up or down the cliff.

Cost

The cost to enter the cave for adults is 42 NIS, or 38 NIS for students. Cameras and video cameras are permitted at the site.
