The Smithsonian Castle was the original home of the Smithsonian Institution. Now that the Smithsonian has grown so much, the Castle has turned into a museum about the Smithsonian museums. The museum has some history about the Smithsonian, and a small collection of artifacts from each of its other museums. There is also a wood "map" of Washington DC that shows the location of the museum buildings in relation to the rest of the city.

The Castle serves as a "visitor information" area for the Smithsonian museums, as well as member services (if you are a member of the Smithsonian). There are a couple guided tours of the Castle, but there's not that much to see.

Cost

Like all Smithsonian museums, entrance to the Smithsonian Castle is free.

Estimated Visiting Time

There really isn't all that much to see here. When we were visiting, they had a special exhibit showing some of the architectural concepts for a new museum building that was going to be built. Otherwise, there is just one small room with exhibits from other museums. Expect to spent 15-30 minutes here.
