This museum is located in the house that Rembrandt lived and worked in while he lived in Amsterdam. Many of the rooms were furnished and decorated as they had been while he lived there (as described by his writings and drawings). There were several paintings on display, by Rembrandt and other painters (Rembrandt was an art dealer as well as an artist). Some rooms contained artifacts that Rembrandt used to create his paintings, such as the ingredients used to make paint, and items used for creating still life compositions. There were a couple of live demonstrations. In one room a few women were working on some weaving, and in another room a man was working on some engravings. Many of Rembrandt's engravings were also on display throughout the building.
A free audio guide was included with admission. The audio guide described some of the rooms, their function, and occasionally provided some interesting facts. The audio guide was available in several different languages. In addition to the audio guide, there were some information boards about Rembrandt and the building.
The museum also included entrance to a small gallery. At the time we visited, the artist on display was Horst Janssen. His work was different and quite strange.
Estimated Visiting Time
The building is quite tall - 4 stories of steep stairs. Allow 45 minutes to go through the entire museum at a leisurely pace.
