Red Bamboo is a vegetarian restaurant located on West 4th street, just West of Union Square. Many of their menu items say things like "Chicken" or "Beef", but they really mean "a soy substitute that kind of resembles [meat]". I didn't try any of the meat substitute products (they scare me), but the things I did try were mediocre.

Dress

Very casual

Cost

Quite affordable - most entrees were around $10.

Service

There was nothing note worthy about the service.

Items Ordered

Broccoli and Sweet Potato Tempura

Breaded and seasoned broccoli and yams deep fried in a traditional Japanese tempura batter served with a soy ginger dressing
Cost:$6.95

The vegetable tempura was almost certainly the best thing we ordered. It consisted of chunks of broccoli and sweet potato that were battered and fried. Nothing makes vegetables tastier than deep frying them! The soy sauce added a bit of salt flavor and made them more moist. There were quite a few of these - it was definitely good value for the price. This appetizer was large enough to share.

Four Cheese Ravioli

Ricotta, romano, parmesan and mozzarella cheese ravioli smothered in a roasted garlic marinara sauce and served with garlic toast
Cost:$9.95

The four cheese ravioli was pretty disappointing. The ravioli were quite plain and made with white flour (which is odd, considering the restaurant is supposed to be healthy). I didn't think they cooked it long enough either, the pasta was pretty tough.

Teriyaki Vegetable Stir Fry

Zucchini, yellow squash, carrots, asparagus, cauliflower and broccoli seasoned and stir fried in a sweet teriyaki glaze. Served with a side of brown or white rice
Cost:$8.95; plus $2 for soy shrimp, soy chicken, or soy beef

I ordered the vegetable stir fry with brown rice. It was just like what the description said - a collection of vegetables in a sweet teriyaki glaze. The teriyaki glaze was very thick - it almost had the consistency of jello. Still, it was nice and sweet, and added some good flavor to the vegetables.
