We stayed at the Protea President Hotel during our three nights in Cape Town. The hotel looked nice, but had a few things about it that were a bit off. The hallway and the rooms had a funny smell. The rooms were also quite cold in the winter, and the heating didn't work very well.

As with most beds in the area, the bed was actually two beds stuck together to make it look like a king bed, but the sheets went all the way across both beds. The shower was nice, except that it had trouble draining.

Otherwise, the room was fairly large, with a couch next to the window. We had a view of the ocean through the buildings in front of us. The room was described as a sea-view room, but it wasn't as impressive as it sounds. There was a little kitchenette containing a sink, a coffee maker, and a toaster.

The hotel had a nice pool with some gardens and a fountain out the back, but it was too cold in the winter.

Breakfast

The breakfast was a buffet. The fruit selection was fairly extensive including some fresh and some canned fruit. There was a selection of cold cheese, meats, fish, pasteries, and cereals. There was a hot section containing an omellete bar, and some cooked vegetables and meats. There was a sweets section with eggo waffles and a variety of toppings. There were some juices as well as tea and coffee.

Location

The hotel was about a 10 minute taxi ride (57R) to the V&A Waterfront. One of the locals we were talking to said there was a bus we could take one block away, and that would be much cheaper than a taxi. Unfortunately, we didn't know how the buses operated, and we were told they don't run very late in the evening.

The hotel didn't seem to be very close to anything, except the beach. If you wanted to go somewhere, you needed a car. While exploring the surrounding area for food, we did find a stretch of road that had a small mall containing a Simply Asia restaurant and a grocery store.
