The Outrigger Kanaloa at Kona is a complex of small buildings (each building holding four units). Some of the buildings are available for short-term rentals, like a hotel. Cleaning service changes the towels everyday, but rooms are only cleaned between guests. We were staying in unit number 3204. It was quite large (for the six of us - you could fit eight people in the unit), and very nice. It was easily equivalent to a 4-star hotel.

The property featured a number of communal barbecues. The three swimming pools (although one of them was closed when we visited) all closed by 10pm. Laundry was free, although laundry soap was only provided for one load. Wireless internet access was available in some parts of the property, but not all. I think there was probably a wireless access point in the lobby, and if your unit was too far, you were out of luck.

The unit that we stayed in was quite large, and very nice. It had two bedrooms and an upstairs loft with two single beds. There was also an outdoor lanai area with a small table and chairs with a nice ocean view. All rooms had overhead ceiling fans, but the upstairs room was still too hot to sleep in. Air conditioning was available for an extra fee (which we did not pay).

The Kitchen

The kitchen had nice appliances. There was a stainless steel fridge/freezer, dishwasher, and stove. Dishes, cutlery, and glasses were all provided. There were no seasoning spices (or other edible products) provided, so we had to buy everything that we wanted to cook.

The Bedrooms

The unit had a master bedroom (with an attached huge bathroom complex), a second bedroom (which was slightly smaller), an upstairs loft with two single beds, and a pull-out couch in the TV room (across from the kitchen). Both bedrooms featured walk-in closets.

The Bathrooms

The bathroom complex in the master bedroom was really something unique about this place. There was a nice bathtub, a shower (with two water spouts), and a toilet - each with their own rooms (and door)! The bathroom complex was so big that at different times, multiple members in our group got disoriented while in the bathroom and trying to find the exit.

The main bathroom was smaller (a more normal size). It had two sinks, and a shower that was behind glass block. The shower was quite neat - the glass blocks were positioned so that there was no need for a shower curtain or shower door.

Complaints

Although this place was large, we did have some complaints that prevented it from getting a higher rating. One evening, we found a very, very large beetle in one of the bedrooms. There was also a trail of ants in the kitchen leading from the ceiling (of the loft) to the kitchen area. Also, there was a charge for using the phone for local calls.

Surrounding Area

The condo complex is located a short drive from the main downtown Kona area. There isn't much around the condo that is within walking distance, except for a small shopping mall with a movie theater. The condo complex has beach access to a black lava rock path along the ocean, and a small black sand beach. While we were there the waves were strong enough that we did not attempt to go in the water with large sharp rocks so close to shore.

Cost

Expect to pay around $300 USD per night to stay here. Considering the size of the place you get, this is really fairly good value.
