The National Museum of American History is one of the many Smithsonian museums located in Washington, D.C. The museum has a number of exhibits that feature various events and time periods in American history. When we visited, there were large areas devoted to the many wars in America's history, the growth of rail transport, and the history of power generation.

Getting There

The National Museum of American History is located just east of the washington monument, along the north end of the National Mall that connects the Washington Monument and the US Capitol BUilding. It is easiest to get there if you are on foot, as parking may be difficult to find in the area.

Cost

Like all Smithsonian museums, entrance to the National Museum of American History is free.

Estimated Visiting Time

Like most of the Smithsonian museums, the National Museum of American History is quite large. If you have the time, you could probably spend the better part of a day here. However, there are so many interesting museums in the area, you may find it a better use of time to spend an hour or two looking at the exhibits you're really interested in, and then moving on to another museum. This museum does offer a couple free guided tours of the museum highlights each day - check the website for more information on when these tours are offered.
