Mustang Thakali Kitchen is a Nepalese & Tibetan restaurant located in the Jackson Heights neighborhood in Queens, NY. The area is full of Indian restaurants, and we thought we'd try something different that we'd never had before. The food incorporated elements of Chinese and Indian food with some different spices and flavors. The food was interesting. We got a mix of good and bad dishes.

The restaurant looked a bit run down, but seemed somewhat authentic with unusual artifacts hanging on the walls. Overall, I'm glad we tried it, but I wouldn't be rushing to go back.

Items Ordered

Aloo Chilly

Spicy Potato
Cost:$6.50

This appetizer was the best item we had here. The potatoes were a little bit spicy, but full of flavor. It was a really nice spice mix that somehow reminded me a bit of Manchurian cauliflower I've had at some Indian restaurants. The only downside was that I found it to be a little bit too salty. The potatoes were crispy and were served with onions and green peppers.

Vegetable Momo

served with Chutney
Cost:$7.25

The vegetable momo were disappointing. They were not served with anything and they were fairly plain tasting. They were filled with mostly cabbage, which was the only taste they had. They were also sticky and hard to pick up without breaking them.

Chicken Thali

served with rice, vegetable, lentil soup & pickle
Cost:$10.95

The thali was an interesting dish. It was a dark meat chicken curry served on a large plate surrounded by different items. The chicken was not the best quality of meat - it was a bit fatty. The curry sauce was not spicy, but had a nice mild spiced flavor anyway.

Clockwise from the chicken is a lentil soup which was really delicious and a bit creamy. Next to it was a cooked green vegetable that tasted alright. The potatoes and green beans were mildly spiced and cooked to a creamy texture. There was a slice of cucumber and carrot, perhaps in lieu of a salad? The pickles were mildly picked cucumber and hot peppers in a slightly spicy tomato based sauce. Then there was some red sauce which I'm not sure what it was for.
