Murray's Cheese is a Deli and gourmet food shop in the West Village of Manhattan. In addition to selling a wide variety of cheeses, they also offer cheese classes and tours of their cheese caves. The cheese cave tour begins with a brief history of Murray's Cheese shop and a bit of background on aging cheese. You then get to go inside their 4 cheese caves.
A cheese cave is just a room that is temperature and humidity controlled. It isn't quite as exciting as it sounds. However, the tour was quite informative and we learned quite a bit about the cheese aging process. The caves are used to age and store cheese. The first cheese cave we went into was very stinky, the next two smelled strange, and the last one smelled quite nice. Each of the rooms had different types of cheese, and it was interesting to see the stages some of them go through. At the end of the tour, we were given two cheese slices to sample two different types of cheese.
The tour guide knew a lot about cheese and answered all our questions. If you are a cheese lover, you will probably enjoy this tour. Others might find it something interesting to do while you're in the area.
Reservations
The tours are offered occasionally on weekends. Each tour only takes about 10 people. To join the tour you need to register in advance. You can register through their website. When we signed up two weeks in advance, there were only a few spots left.
Cost and Tour Time
When I took the tour it was $10 per person. The tour lasts about 30 minutes, but may vary depending on how many questions people ask. Our tour started 5 minutes late, and finished 15 minutes late (for a total of 40 minutes).
