Muir Woods National Monument is a National park about 30-45 minutes (by car) from San Francisco, California. The park is famous for its redwood trees. They are not the oldest or tallest, but they are pretty close. The park is very beautiful and can be quite peaceful in parts.

The park has some very comfortable and easy walking paths of varying lengths up to 2 miles. Much of the path is paved or boardwalked. For those looking for more of a hike, there are several longer trails that branch off from the main path for a total of 6 miles of paths.

Visiting

We visited during earth week when the entrance to the park is free. Normally, there is a small entrance fee. We arrived early before the park became very busy. By midday there were a lot more people and the paths were becoming crowded. Also prepare for cooler temperatures in the shade of the trees.

There were bathrooms and drinking fountains at the entrance to the park. There was also a small cafe.

Getting There

There are several tour buses that come here from San Francisco. We drove here with a rental car from San Francisco. The last part of the drive takes you through some narrow windy roads along a steep mountain side. There are two parking lots near the park entrance, but these can fill up quickly. There is additional parking along the roadside, but on busy days these can be a long walk from the entrance.
