Luma is a slightly upscale restaurant located on the second floor of the Bell Lightbox building in downtown Toronto. The restaurant has a balcony in the summer, and also offers views of the CN Tower. The food was all quite good and nicely presented, although nothing was spectacular.

Dress

Smart casual - jeans and a nice shirt are fine. Some men were wearing jackets, but not many.

Cost

Slightly more expensive than average - mains range from about $20-40.

Service

Our waiter was quite friendly, but otherwise there was nothing note worthy.

Reservations

We made same-day reservations for around 6pm on a Saturday evening. The restaurant did manage to fill up later on.

Items Ordered

Soup of the Day

chef-inspired, seasonal
Cost:$8

The soup of the day was a butternut squash soup with Crème fraiche. It was a very rich and creamy soup.

Burrata Salad

fresh mozzarella cheese with beetroot, roasted eggplant, marjoram and pine nut vinaigrette
Cost:$16

The mozzarella cheese in this salad was quite good. There were a number of variety of beets, although not very many of each. The roasted eggplant the cheese was sitting on was an unusual addition, but it went pretty well.

Free Range Chicken

cornmeal polenta, cold pressed canola oil, braised garlic, swiss chard and spiced date jus
Cost:$28

The skin of the chicken was salty, but the chicken itself was quite moist. The sauce was mixed with polenta and added a nice flavor to the chicken. The sauce was a little bit sweet and not spicy.

Grilled Beef Tenderloin

braised beef cheeks, crispy potato chips, celery root purée, caramelized sunchokes, watercress and wild mustard jus
Cost:$36

The grilled beef was a pretty typical steak. The chips and potato it was served with were good, but average. I didn't think the celery root puree and jus were the right accompanyment to the steak - the flavor they added didn't seem to fit properly.

S'mores Hot Chocolate

soma malted hot chocolate, navan, frangelico
Cost:$10

The hot chocolate had a melted marshmallow on top and was topped with graham crackers. It had a little bit of a kick that it received from the hazelnut liqueur. You could taste the hazelnut, but not the alcohol.

Willy Wonka

dark valrhona chocolate delice, caramelized bananas, peanut butter ice cream and cocoa nib crisp
Cost:$10

I think the most unique part of this dessert was the peanut butter ice cream. It just had an incredible peanut taste. The chocolate delice was thin, but very thick and rich. It tasted like eating chocolate butter.
