Ligne D'Azur

Nice, Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur, France

Nice, Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur, France
Overall Experience: 7 / 10
Start Date: Saturday, September 12, 2009

Ligne D'Azur is the bus line used in Nice, France, and the surrounding area. Tickets can be purchased on the bus for 1€ (one euro). Maps and schedules are available online, at the central bus station (Gare Routiere), or at the tourist office on the boardway. We found the online schedules to be somewhat out of date, while the paper copies available at the bus terminal or tourist office were accurate.

Ligne D'Azur also operates a small tramway in Nice, but we found the city small enough that it was easy to just walk everywhere.

Taking a bus from Nice to Monaco

Traveling from Nice to Monaco by bus is quite easy. Get to the central bus station, Gare Routiere, and wait for the 100 bus to Monaco/Menton. During the peak period of the day, it operates every 15 minutes.

When boarding the bus, tell the driver you are going to Monaco, and how many tickets you would like, and then pay him your fare. Tickets from Nice to Monaco by bus are just 1€ each way, despite some out-of-date information available online. There is no passport control or any barriers between Nice and Monaco - the bus keeps going right through Monaco, making usual stops.

Push the button on the bus to request a stop. If you have a map, you can follow along. Otherwise, the best place to get off the bus is at the "Casino" stop. It is at the top of a large hill.

When you want to get back to Nice from Monaco, wait at one of the bus stations in Monaco that has the "100" logo on the bus stop, pay the driver the standard 1€ fare, and then take the bus back to the Gare Routiere central bus station.

Taking a bus from Nice to the Airport

Another popular bus route is the 98 bus that goes to the airport. It is a "special fare" bus - all travelers must purchase a 4€ "all-day" bus pass. This works out well if you're just arriving in Nice, but not so well if you're going to the airport to leave.

The bus makes a number of stops along the main promenade - just look for a bus stop with the "98" marker, and you will know you're in the right place.

Unlike most buses, the 98 bus only allows people to get off at the airport terminals (it stops at both 1 and 2, and the car parking lot). People can get on at any stop along the way, but they must take the bus all the way to the airport. This system is reversed when leaving the airport - people can get off at any stop along the way, but no more passengers are allowed on.
