The Catacomb of El-Shuqafa (also known as Kom El-Shuqafa) is a catacomb located in Alexandria, Egypt. There is a small display of Sarcophagai outside the catacomb, but they're not much to look at. Like most tourist sites in Egypt, nothing is labeled.

After entering, visitors descend a three-level spiral staircase that's cut into the rock in the ground. The entire catacomb is cut into the rock, and it's very neat to see. At the very back of the catacomb, there are two large sarcophagai that are also cut into the rock. Since there is no lid, the opening to place the body is located behind the wall. There is a walkway (also cut into the rock) behind the sarcophagai so visitors can see how the bodies were laid inside.

Although the catacomb is quite neat to see, it's also quite small. Don't expect a great big labyrinth!

Cost

Foreign tourists pay 25 LE to visit. No photography or video recording is permitted.

Estimated Visiting Time

The catacombs are very neat, but not very large. 30-40 minutes is sufficient to go down in the catacomb and explore it.
