Ka is a Cirque du Soleil show located in the MGM Grand Hotel. I had very high expectations going into this show, and I was not disappointed. I had heard that it was a blend of traditional Las Vegas Cirque du Soleil with martial arts and a story. That's quite misleading - there is very little "story", and the martial arts isn't all that great either. ...but this show is fantastic.

Ka differs from Mystere in a number of ways. Mystere is a more traditional circus show, in that there are a number of very distinct (and impressive) acts. With Ka, the show is presented in a more story-like manner - the costume changes are less obvious (there is other action taking place during that time).

The real star of the show is the stage - when you first enter the Ka theater, you will notice that the stage is missing - there is just a large hole there. Throughout the show, the movable stage goes up, down, and twists and turns in all directions. It's utilized incredibly well.

The show is very visually appealing. The sets and the costumes are very beautiful. Some of the acts are just amazing, and the performers are incredible. The theater is also decorated to theme. You feel like you are walking into a cathedral.

In other Cirque du Soleil shows, I have been annoyed by the "stupid clown". I'm pleased to say that this show has no stupid clown. The costumes are bright, colorful, and spectacular. The stage is amazing. The music is also great. Each seat has speakers in the back. Overall, I found the volume level of the music was quite loud, but the music was very good, so I didn't mind.

Pre-show entertainment

Approximately 20 minutes before the show starts, there is some pre-show entertainment: actors enter the theater, and begin moving around and climbing up the walls. Throughout the show the performance comes out into the audience - people are swinging out over the audience and part of the set surrounds the seating area. Five minutes before the show starts, there is a short entertaining skit that demonstrates "No cell phones, no cameras".

Cost and Seating

There are tickets for as low as $70, but they're in the worst possible location. In my opinion, we had the best available seats. We were in section 201 (which is on the left-hand side of the theater, looking toward the stage). We were in row BB, seats 25 and 26. Row BB was the first row in that section from the middle walkway. (There was no balcony - there was a walkway between this section and the one in front). The seats were next to the left-center aisle. The people just across the aisle were paying full-price, while these seats were "general" ($125 + tax = $137).

Dress

Casual dress is appropriate - jeans and a t-shirt are fine, although some people dress up a little.
