Jaiya Thai is located in the Kips Bay neighborhood of Manhattan. Their menu is fairly typical of Thai restaurants in NYC. The restaurant is fairly nice with a modern decor. It was pretty dark inside, but that gave it a bit more of a classy feel.
The food was average for Thai. The prices seemed a little bit higher than some other places with similar food and quality. They can make their food really spicy if you ask for it!
Dress
Casual - shorts and t-shirt are fine
Cost
Appetizers were $5-$10. Main courses were $15-$20.
Reservations
We didn't have reservations, but didn't have to wait for a table on a weeknight. The place was fairly full, so if you're in a hurry you may want to call ahead.
Items Ordered
Vegetarian Spring Rolls and Green Papaya
Spring Rolls: Cabbages, glass noodles, mushrooms, bamboo shoots in spring roll skin. Served with sweet and sour sauce. Green Papaya: Shredded Green Papaya, tomatoes, string beans, roasted peanuts, garlic with chili lime dressingThe spring rolls were two typical spring rolls cut in half. They were good, but there was nothing special about them or the sauce.
The green papaya was a fairly spicy salad with lots of green papaya and a bit of other veggies. I like the green papaya salad, but it's not nearly as good as a green mango salad, which they didn't offer on their menu.
Mussaman (Sweet and Sour) Curry
Mussaman curry with coconut milk, potatoes, and roasted peanutsThe curry was spicy. I asked them to make it hot, and it was hot! I couldn't believe how spicy it was. I appreciated the spice, mainly because I was in awe of how spicy something could be. In the future, I would ask for my curry to be of a "medium" spice. This is one restaurant where "spicy" is too spicy!
The curry came with a choice of brown rice or white rice. The sauce was good, but the dish was lacking some more vegetables. I like a thick curry, and this dish had a lot of liquid.
Pad Cashew Nuts (Cashew Nuts Stir Fried)
Stir fried meat with cashew nuts, onions, oyster sauce, black soy sauce, roasted chilies, and mushroomThe cashew nut chicken was pretty good, but I've had better. The sauce seemed a bit watery, but had a nice medium spice. Like the curry, I felt this dish was lacking more vegetable. It also came with a side of rice.
