Earthen Oven is an Indian restaurant located in midtown Manhattan. Much of their food is served in small bowls with a side dish of rice. This makes it good for ordering several dishes and sharing with a group.
I was a bit disappointed with Earthen Oven. They tried to be a slightly above-average restaurant, but other than their prices, they didn't deliver. The quality of the food was pretty good, but I've had better Indian food at other restaurants.
Dress
Fairly casual. They try to have a slightly upscale atmosphere, but it was hot out, and I still felt comfortable wearing shorts.
Cost
Prices are slightly more expensive than average. Most dinner entrees are $17.95. Appetizers range from $7-$10.
Service
The service at Earthen Oven was a bit slow. When your food does arrive, the waiter serves the food by scooping some of it onto your plate.
Items Ordered
Vegetable Samosas
Mildly spiced potatoes, peas, cashew nuts, raisins stuffed in a light pastrySamosas are a great Indian appetizer. For $6.95, we received two samosas of average size. They had some interesting fillings in them that I hadn't tried before, and I thought they were pretty good. I didn't think they were better than the traditional samosa, but I still enjoyed them. For "mildly spiced" I thought they were more of a medium to spicy.
Chicken Curry
Cubes of boneless chicken simmered in a gravy of roasted spices, curry leaves and coconut. A specialty of coastal Karnataka.I was disappointed with the curry. Although it was spicy, it didn't have a strong curry flavor. The spice must have come from elsewhere. The curry also didn't have much of a coconut flavor.
The curry was good for sharing, since it came in its own little bowl.
