Don the Beachcomber Restaurant is located at the Royal Kona Resort on the Big Island of Hawaii. It's a slightly upscale restaurant, a bit more expensive than most, with a nice view of Kailua Bay. The restaurant is positioned so that with a window seat, you will have a good view of the sunset. Both indoor and outdoor seating is available.

Cost

Most restaurants in Hawaii are slightly more expensive than the mainland. This is a bit of an upscale restaurant, with higher prices. Most entrees are between $25-$30.

Dress

Although the restaurant serves slightly fancier food, the dress is still fairly casual. Many people were wearing "smart casual" clothes, but shorts and a t-shirt is still just fine.

Items Ordered

Bread and Butter

Cost:Free

We were brought out a basket of fresh quality bread. The butter was spiced and had a nice flavor to it.

Tropical Brie's

A wedge of silky soft brie rolled in shredded coconut, deep fried golden brown, with papaya and mango compote and home made island mini-loaf bread.
Cost:11.95

The brie cheese was covered in a crispy coconut shell, and was delicious. Adding some of the mango sauce to the brie gave it a nice fruity flavor. Although it did taste pretty tropical, it was also a bit greasy (since it was fried).

Pi Yi'd Baby Backs

Pork ribs coated with our own house made rub. Flame broiled and baked with Don's own honey-rum-mango-pineapple BBQ glaze. Served with french fries and pineapple coleslaw.
Cost:Half rack: $19.95; Full Rack: $24.95

The pineapple coleslaw was definitely unique. It had a very "summery" flavor. The barbecue sauce on the ribs was just OK. The fries also weren't anything special. This was definitely not the restaurant's specialty. I tried some of the dishes that other members in the group had ordered and I think I would have been better off ordering something else - the fish was especially good.

Hawaiian Luau Plate

A Hawaiian tradition at Don's Hale: A sampling of Hawaii's distinctive dishes including kalua pork, chicken luau cooked in coconut milk and fresh spinach, lomi omi salmon, Hawaiian sweet potato, island poke and choice of poi or cocnut rice.
Cost:$24.95

This entree came with a little bit of everything! The pork was the main component of the plate, and there sure was a lot of it. Some pieces were very salty, and other pieces were too fatty to enjoy.

This was my first time eating raw fish, and it didn't taste as bad as I thought it would. I didn't finish it, but it wasn't that bad.

The salmon salsa was also a bit disappointing. The salmon was chewy.

The coconut spinach was quite good. It had a strong coconut flavor, and went very well with the coconut rice.
