De Bruine Boon is a cafe and restaurant in Leiden just down the street from the train station. There are tables inside as well as several cafe tables out on the street. They are situated in a nice spot on the river with a view of the water fountain and wind mill.

Every morning around 9:30 I saw them bring out a sign, written in Dutch, that looked like it said something about fresh apple tart from the oven. I thought I'd try it out one day. They also have other food available (and English menus) - their "Hamburger & Fries" is a great introduction to Dutch hamburgers.

Service

Like other cafes in Leiden, it is very casual. Take a seat wherever you can find a spot and someone will come and take your order eventually. You can pay at the bar, or get the attention of a waiter to bring your bill whenever you feel like leaving.

Items Ordered

Apple Tart

Cost:€2.20

The apple tart was warm and fresh from the oven which was really nice. It wasn't quite what I expected. It was very doughy and had raisins and nuts as well. The apple inside was cut to very small pieces. I thought it would be more like an apple pie with lots of apple, but it was more like an apple cake. It was still very good and I did enjoy eating it, especially warm and fresh.
