Calexico started out as a food cart in Manhattan. After the success of their carts, they opened up two restaurant locations. We visited this location in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. The restaurant has a lot of the same items as the cart, plus a few more, and the food is still just as great.

Reservations

I don't know if they take reservations. We managed to get one of the last available tables before the restaurant filled up and a waiting line formed.

Items Ordered

Union Street Salad

romaine, radicchio, avocado, grilled corn, goat cheese, cucumber, avocado, radish, tomato, toasted sesame seeds, sherry vinaigrette
Cost:$9

This was a really good salad. It had some nice twists to it that gave it a bit of a Mexican feel. It had a good amount of ingredients, so that it wasn't just a lettuce salad.

Carne Asada Burrito

marinated grilled skirt steak, avocado salsa
Cost:$9

This is my favorite item from their cart. The steak is slow cooked in an unbelievably good mix of spices and just melts apart in your mouth. The beans and sauce they put in the burrito all add to the great taste. This has got to be one of the best burritos in the world. The burrito is pretty large and makes for a decent sized meal for only $9.

Tacos - Chorizo and Nopales

Chorizo - spicy sausage, roasted potato, cotija cheese, salsa ranchera
Nopales - grilled cactus, roasted pepper, sweet onion, grilled corn
Cost:$4 each

The tacos are pretty good, although not as delicious or filling as the burrito. I wanted to try some of the unique items they carry at their restaurant. I had never had tacos like these before. It was interesting, although in the future I'll probably stick with the traditional favorites.

Sweet Plantains

Cost:$5

The sweet plantains are listed as a side dish, although we like to eat them as a dessert. The plantains are fried bringing out their extra sweet flavor.
