The Buns in the Sun restaurant (located in Kona on the island of Hawaii) is a cafe/restaurant that serves salads and sandwiches. The cafe also offers a selection of cookies and cakes for dessert. This restaurant is the meeting point for Mauna Kea Summit Adventures, so we thought we would go and try it out.

I wasn't overly impressed with the restaurant, but it wasn't terrible, either. It's probably not somewhere I would go back to, but I didn't mind my meal there.

Cost

Everything in Hawaii seems to be a bit expensive. Most sandwiches were $9 here. The cold "make your own sandwich" menu started at $7.95 per sandwich, but had additional charges for cheese or veggies.

Parking

Buns In The Sun is located in a fairly large shopping complex. There is tons of parking available just outside the restaurant.

Items Ordered

Hawaiian Kalua Pig

Sauteed smoked Kalua pig, swiss cheese, lettuce and tomato on a grilled hoagie roll (also available with Kalua chicken)
Cost:$8.95

We had heard good things about the Hawaiian Kalua Pig before coming here, and it was pretty good. I ordered it on a wheat bun. It was served with a bit of cheese, lettuce, and tomato. The meat tasted like rib meat, but without the bones. I was disappointed that there wasn't more "stuff" on this sandwich. There was a good amount of meat, but there was only one slice of tomato, and one lettuce leaf on the whole sandwich. The sandwich came with a bag of potato chips.
