Black Rock
Ka'anapali, Hawaii, United States
Ka'anapali, Hawaii, United States
Black Rock is the name given to a prime snorkeling location in Maui. It's located at the end of a popular beach (Ka'anapali Beach), and has some really phenomenal snorkeling. It's named "Black Rock" for the large outcropping of black lava rocks. This outcropping of black rock marks one end of the beach.
Going snorkeling at Black Rock was simply amazing. I don't ordinarily like swimming (especially outdoors), but snorkeling at Black Rock was well worth it. The abundance of beautiful tropical fish was unbelievable. Whenever you stuck your head in the water, it was really like looking into an aquarium. At one point, we even saw a very large (5-foot long) sea turtle. It was huge! A little further out there is also quite a variety of colorful corals. The area of great snorkeling is quite large. Be careful about going out too far, go with a partner, the currents can be quite strong making it difficult to swim back to shore.
This is probably the best snorkeling spot on Maui. There has been a lot of development in this area recently, and it's really gained in popularity. There are some big hotels nearby, and the snorkeling area is always very busy.
Estimated Visiting Time
You could spend the entire day here lounging on the beach, but snorkeling for a full day is tiring. Allow two hours of snorkeling time to fully enjoy yourself here.
Cost
Although the beach is free, you may have to pay for parking if you are unable to find any.
Parking
There are a couple different lots along the Ka'anapali Parkway, but they often fill up quickly. Odds are you'll need to pay for parking in one of the nearby hotels. Expect to pay at least $2/hour, with a $20 max.
