The Ben Thanh Vietnamese and Thai restaurant in Waterloo is located in a small plaza in Waterloo, at the corner of King and Northfield. It offers pretty average Thai food, at pretty average prices. We were a bit disappointed at the items that we ordered this time around, but they had quite an extensive menu, and it's possible that we just got unlucky with the items that we chose.

This restaurant is relatively nice on the inside. There's nothing special about the interior, but it is fairly new, so everything looks pretty clean.

Most of the items on the menu come without rice, but you can order rice/noodles for an additional $1.50 per bowl.

Cost

Thai food is usually pretty cheap, and this Viet-Thai restaurant is no different. Most entrees are less than $10, although they did have a prix fix menu which was more.

Dress

This is a very casual place.

The restaurant is located in a plaza, so there's a big parking lot in front.

The mango salad was pretty good, but it didn't actually contain all that much mango. The salad was mostly lettuce, and just had mango slices laid on top of the lettuce to make it appear that it had more mango. Nevertheless, the salad was pretty good. It had the typical sweet dressing that goes on mango salads. It had a slight spice to it, but certainly nothing overwhelming.

I was disappointed with this dish. The vegetables were broccoli, carrots, celery, mushrooms, two pieces of corn, and bok choy. I felt that for a vegetable stir fry there should have been more vegetables. I also found that the pieces were too large and difficult to eat, especially without a knife. The sauce was fairly bland, and there was a lot of noodles. I ended up scooping in some sauce from another dish at our table and mixing it in with my dish. That greatly improved the flavor.

This stir fry was a bit on the spicy side (it was labeled with a "fire" icon on the menu). Unfortunately, it didn't have any other flavor. Usually Thai food has a nice flavorful sauce, but the sauce here was very disappointing.

The dish had quite a few pieces of chicken and onion, and a fair number of green and red pepper pieces. It would have been much better if it had some flavor (besides just the spice).
