Belthazar is a large steakhouse located at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town. They have a huge wine selection - both by the glass, and by the bottle. Belthazar was a pretty good steak house, although slightly on the expensive side. They have both indoor and outdoor seating, and their outdoor patio is heated in the winter.
Dress
Most people were wearing 'smart casual' clothing, but it seemed like a fairly causal place (at least outdoors)
Cost
A bit more expensive than average - each entree was approximately 150 rand. A single bottle of water was 50 rand - almost $10! A cheap glass of red wine was about the same.
Reservations
We did not have any reservations when we visited on a wednesday night during the winter, and there was lots of room available.
Items Ordered
Beetroot And Butternut Salad
Char-grilled beetroot, roasted butternut, feta, rocket, and caramelized nuts tossed in extra virgin olive oil with garlic and a splash of lemonThe beets and butternut squash in this salad were both nicely roasted. The salad also had some feta cheese and candied nuts. Although the picture makes it look like there was a lot of butternut squash/beet, the salad was mostly lettuce with just a few pieces of squash/beet on the outside to make it look pretty.
Beef Fillet with Red Wine Sauce
146 Rand (250g fillet) + 26 Rand for the red wine sauceThe beef fillet was both tender and tasty. It tasted like a proper steakhouse steak. The red wine sauce was pretty good - it was thick and flavorful. Along with the game kebab, we found that we had a lot of meat at our table -we weren't quite able to finish it all. We probably should have gotten some side dishes, but there would have been no way we could finish everything.
Game Kebab
A selection of game served on a skewer with peppadews and onions. Game selection of the day: Springbok, Kudu, Impala, and Wildebeast. We thought this dish would be an efficient way to taste a number of different types of meat. The springbok, kudu, and impala all tasted very similar. They were all very tender and had a fantastic flavor. They were great on their own, even without adding a sauce. The wildebeast was very tough and difficult to chew. We left most of it.
