Basilique Notre-Dame de Fourvière Lyon

The Basilique Notre-Dame de Fourvière is located on the highest point in Lyon. It is visible from almost anywhere in the city. The plaza next to the building has a very nice panoramic view of Lyon. The basilica is fairly nice for a European church and is filled with some very detailed mosaics. If you are in the area, it is worth a visit. Entrance to the basilica is free. There were tours available, but I think they were only in French.

Getting There

Inside the Basilique Notre-Dame de Fourvière Lyon

You can take a Lyon Metro funicular (inclined railway) up to the basilica. You can also walk up the hill to the basilica. It is probably about a 45 min walk from Old Lyon. The hike up includes many stairs, but also goes through a nice park that covers the hill side below the basilica. If you are not up for the climb, you may choose to walk down through the gardens instead.

Estimated Visiting Time

Allow about 30 minutes to walk around in the Notre-Dame de Fourvière. In the basement, there was 10 minute video about the building in several languages that gives some background on what you are seeing.
