The B&O Railroad Museum is a museum dedicated to railroads and the history of rail in the United States. In addition to a few rooms with some displays of old trinkets and model trains, there is a large roundhouse with about 20 old train engines, and an additional maintenance yard with another 8-12 engines. There are a couple tracks that have train cars you can go into, and one active train that provides rides to visitors for an additional fee.

If you're a train enthusiast, you will probably love this museum. There are a ton of trains and old engines here, in addition to a number of knowledgeable volunteers who love talking about trains.

There were a few activities for kids, but not that many as you might expect. Kids would probably have the most fun climbing in some of the engines and train cars out on the tracks where a number of trains are set up to be entered by guests.

Cost

Admission for adults is $14/person. The train rides cost extra money, but we decided to skip it since we heard it goes through a run-down area of Baltimore that wasn't worth seeing.

Getting There

There is a large parking lot at the museum, but if you're staying in the city the easiest way to get to the B&O Museum is to take the Charm City Circulator.

The Roundhouse

The roundhouse is a newly renovated old building that houses a large number of old train engines. You can walk around all of the engines to see them from all sides. When we visited there were a number of volunteers walking about that were happy to answer any questions from visitors or just chat about trains in general.

Estimated Visiting Time

We spent about 90 minutes at the train museum, including some discussion time with some of the volunteers. If you're not a train enthusiast, it's probably sufficient to allow 60-90 minutes to see the whole museum.
