Amma is an Indian restaurant located in midtown, NYC. The food quality is all pretty average for an Indian restaurant, and there are a number of similar restaurants in the area. One weird thing was the entrance - it looked like this restaurant was converted from an old apartment and it didn't have a front door. To enter the restaurant you had to go into the entrance of the apartment building, and the entrance to the restaurant was off to the side.
Dress
It's a fairly casual place, although you wouldn't be out of place if you were a bit dressed up either.
Cost
Average for the area - entrees ranged in price from about $15-$25.
Reservations
We made reservations on the monday of a long weekend, but they weren't needed. There were many other open tables there when we arrived.
Service
Like many Indian restaurants in the area, the dishes are served in separate serving bowls, making it convenient for sharing. When the food was brought out, our waiter scooped out servings from each dish onto our plates.
Items Ordered
Kararee Bhindi
crispy tangy okra, tomatoes and red onionsI thought the crispy okra would be an interesting thing to try, but I was a bit disappointed in it. I love cooking with okra, and have had it prepared before in pakistani restaurants, but the 'crispy okra' didn't do it for me. The okra was shredded into long strips, and they all curled together when they were fried, making them very hard to eat. The flavor and texture was almost like a very thin shoestring potato fry that was lightly seasoned, but from the color I could tell it was okra.
Tandoori Grilled Halibut
mint cilantro marinated, coconut chutney, lemon riceThe grilled halibut had a good amount of flavor for a fish. It was one of the spicier dishes we ordered. The fish was mild tasting on its own, but the coating gave it a nice fresh and spicy flavor. It was served with a little bit of lemon rice and there was a small dish of coconut chutney on the side that we forgot about and didn't try.
Butter Chicken
chicken tikka masalaChicken tikka masala is a pretty typical Indian dish, and this one was pretty typical. We knew what to expect and we weren't disappointed. It was heavy and creamy with a lot of gravy and a few pieces of chicken breast. We ordered rice separately which is really necessary for such a saucy dish.
